Argyll/Bute (Scotland) ... > United Kingdom > Europe
June 17, 2016 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road5.0
Outstanding route on a Saturday and Sunday.. long way to go on an HP4 over two days. scenery in the NW of Scotland is astonishing....highlights...everywhere... little traffic...no police...amazing weather for once i took the time to stop and photograph various spots which could easily have been every ten minutes. Even if you do a third of this route you will be pleased with the roads and scenery. Outstanding

A86 / A889 Dalwhinnie Run

Argyll/Bute (Scotland) ... > United Kingdom > Europe
February 2, 2016 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road5.0
Whoever designed and built this road was into bikes.
We travel up from Dumbarton just to ride it... outstanding combination of fast straights and corresponding bends and much tighter undulating sections. Stacks of opportunities to refine your skills.. if your going hard keep an eye for the occasional farm and side roads. Superbikes come into their own here... midweek is best time to ride..no traffic...no cops..
I'd rate this one of the best stretches in Scotland to show your machine what your made and what shes capable of ....outstanding...enjoy with caution ....

A83 : Lochgilphead to Inverary

Argyll/Bute (Scotland) ... > United Kingdom > Europe
February 2, 2016 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road5.0
This is a great piece of road, on a nice day it's hard to better.
Nice combination of smooth excellent corners with good viz and more challenging tighter and quicker ones.
Real options for smooth quick riding here, the road begs you to wind on, sportsbikes come into their own here.
Pay attention to side and farm roads if your going hard, however there are bags of opportunities to hone your skills. Nick up through the gears and get your gearbox and clutch working as you fire it into the bends heading for your selected apex and exit choice, no need to touch your brakes if your on song... all this lying in my bed on a February night.. roll on the spring

Tyndrum - Cambletown - Dumbarton

Argyll/Bute (Scotland) ... > United Kingdom > Europe
November 23, 2015 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road5.0
Another good long run...up A82 Loch Lomondside.... leave early miss traffic and significant others of course !... nice big bends at the head of the Loch climbing up to Crianlarich. On to the Green Welly... and Dalmally...(Reviews already on here) cut over to Inverary, Lochgilphead...and down the Lochside to Campbeltown, loop back up to Tarbet (Loch Fyne)... option here to get the ferry to Portavadie...go in to the Marina...world class outlet, they do a 9 quid cheeseburger and chips...outstanding!.

Road from Portavadie A886 Road isn't brill to begin with but sweetens out...up the rest and be thankful heading to Arrochar, over to Tarbet (Loch Lomondside) thentoward Balloch/Dumbarton/Glasgow.

Great run, loads of options to head off on to different roads and something a wee bit different with getting the Ferry to Portavadie for that 9 quid cheeseburger...

Enjoy

Tour of Mull

Argyll/Bute (Scotland) ... > United Kingdom > Europe
January 2, 2013 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.0
A cracking route around Mull. Take the ferry from Oban to Craignure or go across at Lochaline to Fishnish. Head up to Tobermory (pubs and cafes here) then cut across to Dervaig and take the Achleck road up and over to Ulva ferry (used during the Mull Rally) and that should wake you up, steep with hairpin bends !!
Follow the coast road all the way round Loch na Keal and over into Loch Scidain. Great views out past Inch Kenneth and on a good day you can see Staffa.
You can hang a left and head out through Bunessan to Fionnphort and then back or just turn left and follow the road back to Craignure through Glen More. Watch out for loose gravel, sheep and tourist buses on this leg.
A great day out if the weathers good

GlenOrchy/Glencoe/Loch Linnhe loop

Argyll/Bute (Scotland) ... > United Kingdom > Europe
January 2, 2013 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.5
A Nice wee loop incorporating some fast roads, spectacular scenery and some nice bends in places.
Watch out for the mobile cameras anywhere between Glen Orchy and Ballachullish.
Good coffee stops at Glencoe Ski Centre and Castle Stalker Cafe at Appin.
Nice run through Glen Orchy Glen following the river Orchy (gets very midgy in the summer !) several nice waterfalls along the way.
Alternative route to Tyndrum (stop at the Green Welly, plenty of bikes stop here) and then back along the A82 towards Glencoe.

Only done this once but enjoyed it tremendously. Most of the road surface is excellent but there is a 5 mile stretch where you have to watch it a bit. There were some police on this road but then there had been a car crash!

B8001 / B842 Kennacraig - Campbelltown ( via Carradale )

Argyll/Bute (Scotland) ... > United Kingdom > Europe
June 24, 2007 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.5
Slower but much more interesting road from Tarbert via Kennacraig then down to Carradale then to Campbelltown. Single track with passing places and some tricky bends to negotiate - sharp, twisty and steep. Looking over Kilbrannan Sound to Arran is georgeous and high road position gives great view. Summer ferry to Lochranza on Arran leaves from Claonaig short distance after start of this route. Great campsite at Carradale but try to keep this a secret.

A816 : Oban - Lochgilphead

Argyll/Bute (Scotland) ... > United Kingdom > Europe
March 5, 2006 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.8
This route has everything, Be very carefull leaving Oban as the main street has some seriously sunken manholes and bodged road repairs, once in the national speed limit the road is largely superb. Within 20 minutes you will have negotiated some spectacular hairpins as you climb up the hilly coastal road. Pegs and panniers can be scraped on some of the corners. The road changes from tight and twisty to wide open stretches where you can see four bends ahead, then quickly back to reality with a series of sharp bends. Some hard down hill braking required on some bits but it's a fantastic road and in places will challenge your road reading skills. As you approach Lochgilphead there are some very long straights with good visibility for one last stretch of the bikes legs. Personally, it's best done north to south.

A861 : Ardgour - Strontian

Argyll/Bute (Scotland) ... > United Kingdom > Europe
December 27, 2005 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road5.0
Recently rebuilt and resurfaced, this outstanding road turns to single track if you proceed past Strontian towards Salen and the western edge of the Ardnamurchan peninsula. But the road from Ardgour to Strontian and back is brilliant, wide, sweeping and fast. Stop at Strontian for grub and then go back to the ferry and Ft William. The sheep are ok with traffic, but at lambing time watch out for mothers running after lambs!

B836 / A886 / A815 / A83 : Dunoon - Inveraray

Leave Dunoon north on the main road from the ferry boat, then bear left on the smaller B836 as far as Lake Striven and then on to Auchenbreck. Turn north on B886. All pretty scenic.

A828 / A82 / A87 : Oban - Portree (Isle of Skye)

Argyll/Bute (Scotland) ... > United Kingdom > Europe
July 15, 2005 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.4
start in oban and follow a85 to connel, cross bridge and pick up a828to south ballachulish, some nice corners and a couple of fast straights to get warmth into your tyres, pick up the a 82 to fort william, some nice views and mostly fast roads ( watch out for the tourist coaches and confused germans)from fort william follow a 82 upto spean bridge and past loch lochy, pick up the a87 near invergarry, soon after entering this road there is a never ending right hand bend ,it opens up the whole way around and is a starter for what must be one of the most fantastic roads in the uk (sorry scotland)it twists and turns its way high up into the hills before carving its way down into the valley with stunning views around every corner, the road surface can be s bit hit and miss but there is quite a lot of shell grip, it is quite bumpy but is just fantastic, the road are very well signed up, they dont waste markings up there so if you see slow on the road then knock it off a bit, there are some fantastic viewpoints if you want to take a look and ther are sufficent petrol stops on this route, the road heads towards kyle of lochalsh and the bridge to skye, which is now toll free, once on skye the roads soon open out and you can build up speed, it is quite bleak but the roads are ace, needing full concentration, is very bumpy on the entry to portree, which a few nice shop and a lovley coffee shop just off the square, time for the trip with a couple of stop was 3 1/2 hours and it is about 150 miles in old money,if you get the chance ride it my words just dont do it justice.

A815 : Gourock - Strachur (Scenic route into West Highlands, Scotland)

Argyll/Bute (Scotland) ... > United Kingdom > Europe
June 1, 2005 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.8
For those of you touring Western Scotland and wishing to by-pass Glasgow and start the scenery show as early as possible: Take the Gourock/Dunoon Ferry from Gourock (just before Greenock on the A78 coast road) Ferries run every hour and it's a twenty minute crossing. Once on the other side of the water carry on northbound. The roads are quieter and even more beautiful than those upto there. Take the A815, which runs along the banks of Loch Eck to a T junction on the banks of Loch Fyne. Turn right, northbound, to another T junction on the A83. Turning right will take you to Loch Lomond (and the tourist traffic) Turning left will carry on around Loch Fyne into Inveraray. If you want to head north, take the A819, which is a narrow right turning just into Inveraray and takes you through Glen Aray, along Loch Awe, to a T junction on the A85, halfway between Tyndrum (for GlenCoe) and Oban (for the coast road). Have fun!
